Bhagavad Gita Class

friday Gita class
Friday Gita Class - started again on January 2 from Chapter 1 of Bhagavad Gita. Please click here for the class recordings.

Five thousand years ago, Arjuna was faced with the difficulty of confronting his friends and relatives in the battlefield of Kurukshetra and was confused about his duty. Like Arjuna, we too face difficulties in the battles of our day to day lives and it is important that we look at these difficulties with the right perspective. Arjuna had Sri Krishna Himself to answer all his questions and we have the Bhagavad-Gita to help us find answers to our questions. Specifically, the Bhagavad-Gita answers questions like "Who is God? Who are we? What is our relationship with God?". Srila Prabhupada mentions in his introduction to the Bhagavad-Gita that the purpose of this scripture is to deliver mankind from the nescience of material existence. To achieve this purpose, Bhagavad- Gita classes are being conducted every Friday at the Laguna beach temple for past six months.

The class is led by His Grace Tukaram Das and Rupanuga Das. The class runs from 7pm to 8:15pm followed by dinner prasadam. The class starts with the "Jaya Radha Madhava" bhajan, followed by a quick recap of the previously completed chapters and an indepth study of 10-15 verses from the current chapter. The class ends with a question answer session. Tukaram Prabhu very gracefully explains the translations, helps us understand the philosophy and the flow of the conversation linking current verses to verses in previous chapters. He also identifies important verses in the Bhagavad-Gita for us to remember. Further questions are discussed and answered during prasadam time.

The Saturday Morning Mangal Arati Program is a wonderful opportunity for someone seeking to advance his spirituality. Many devotees have been attending this program regularly since the past few Saturdays. One gets a glimpse of the early morning rituals and practices that form the core of the Hare Krishna faith. The period before dawn, specifically beginning one and a half hours before sunrise, is called the brahma-muhurta. This period of the day is a particularly potent time for spiritual activities. The program starts at 5am with the Mangal Arati and Tulasi Puja. This is followed by all devotees chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra on their beads, for the next hour and a half. At 7:30 AM Srimad Bhagavatam Class is taught by one of the devotees. The class is followed by Guru Puja and Sringara Arati (Greeting of the Deities). The program ends with breakfast prasadam arranged by the temple.

Chanting the Holy Name in early morning hours (Brahma Muhurta) in association of other devotees is quite blissful. Many devotees have felt that the quality of their chanting has improved considerably while chanting in this environment. To make spiritual advancement, one must follow the ABCD of devotional service i.e. A (Association of devotees), B (Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-Gita), C (Chanting of the Holy Names) D (Diet of prasadam). One can do just that by attending the Saturday morning program. Hare Krishna!
